Cleaning your electric blanket might seem challenging and risky mainly due because of all the wires inside it. However, it’s not that difficult, a bit tedious, yes, but totally worth it so you could use your electric blanket as fresh smelling and clean as it is cosy and warm.
Cleaning by Washing Machine
If you’re not that fond of hand washing, you could use your washing machine. Presoak your electric blanket in mild soap and water for at least 15 minutes and turn on your washer, making sure that it’s on the gentle or delicate setting for two minutes. Afterwards, rinse with cold water. Drain your washing machine and fill it up with lukewarm water and mild detergent. Let it agitate for about a minute, put your blanket in, presoak again for 15 minutes, and then turn it on for two to three minutes.
Washing by Hand
Fill up your tub with lukewarm water and mild detergent. Make sure that the water is ample enough to submerge your electric blanket. Presoak your blanket for 15 to 20 minutes. Once it’s finished soaking, gently but thoroughly squeeze and knead it for a couple of minutes. Once that’s done, get it out of the water and carefully rinse with clean water. Lightly squeeze out all the excess water, careful not to wring it out as you would a typical blanket.
Drying your Electric Blanket
Some people dry their electric blankets using their dryer; some don’t. If you want to use a dryer, just make certain to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions just to be on the safe side. If you’re more comfortable just letting it hang dry, stretch it carefully and hang it on your clothesline. Don’t use clothespins since these could pinch the wiring inside the blanket. Adam Tulloch, an electrical testing and repair expert in Wellington, New Zealand also warns that you must only use your blanket again once it’s thoroughly and completely dry to avoid damaging the wiring, or worse, injuring yourself through an electric shock.
Whether you are planning on washing your electric blanket before using it this winter or washing it before you put it away for the summer, knowing how to wash without destroying it is an excellent way to stay injury-free and safeguard your investment.
